This page is here to assist you in editing or creating artist's pages.

Firstly, this wiki is using MediaWiki, which is what Wikipedia uses. A majority of the core functionality and commands used there can also be used here.

Finding Music Videos

Ideally, this is what has already been done for you, and is the purpose of the wiki; to link the highest quality music videos available online. However, occasionally, you may seek an artist that is under-represented, or another version of a music video, or even a higher quality version. In this case, I suggest you first search the websites supported by the extention EmbedVideo, listed below. These are the easiest to add. If you find a great video on an unsupported service, please add the link to the discussion page, and we'll take a look at how to add functionality to use that website.

The extension used to embed videos is EmbedVideo, and currently supports Imeem, YouTube, Google Video, Daily Motion, MySpace, and MTV Music.

In general, but not always, when looking for an artist's video it is best to start in this order, for reasons explained in each of the website's sections below:

1) imeem 2) MTV Music 3) Daily Motion 4) MySpace Music 5) YouTube

Embedding Video

This Wiki uses an extension to both make adding embedded videos easier, and to allow anonymous users to embed video without giving them access to modifying the HTML of the page, and potentially adding unsafe content. Listed below are the websites that the extension can currently handle; it's a well-built extension, and I will be adding additional websites as I figure them out.

Right now, imeem seems to have the highest-quality videos easily available. Please search there first for the video you'd like to add.

The extention's wiki code looks like this:

{{#ev:Service|VideoID}}

Instead of "Service", you would type the identifier for the service you are pulling the video from:

For Imeem, use "imeem" , for YouTube, use "youtube" , for Google Video, use "googlevideo" , for Daily Motion, use "dailymotion" , for MySpace, use "myspace" , for MTV Music, use "mtv"

Next, you need the Video ID. Help guides for getting the Video ID from these supported services are below.

imeem

imeem hosts on average, the highest quality music videos available, because they stream video at 700 kilobits a second, instead of much lower values often found on other video sharing websites. A hint to finding embeddable videos: Many artists have their own pages on imeem, and often host their music videos themselves. Also, imeem itself typically has very popular music videos as apart of their own channels in Rock, Pop, etc, and allow these videos hosted by their accounts (and not their users) to be embedded.

1) Go to imeem and search for a music video. In this example we'll be using Lady GaGa's 'Just Dance'.

You should see this:

File:imeem1.jpg

2) Copy all of the embed code from the embed box, and paste it someplace; a new text file, or even into the wiki page you're editing itself:

File:imeem2.jpg

3) Find the Video ID, usually a 8+ character alpha-numeric code.

In this case the Video ID for this music video is qn7c0G6HlR

4) The extension's format is as follows:

{{#ev:Service|VideoID}}

So, you replace 'Service' with 'imeem', and 'VideoID' with the code you have pulled from the website. In this case it is 'qn7c0G6HlR'

5) The command you would place inside the artist's wiki page at the point you want the video to show up would be

{{#ev:imeem|qn7c0G6HlR}}

Add a title before the command to identify the video's title, like ===Just Dance Example===

So the two lines of code entered into the wiki page for Lady GaGa would turn this:

===Imeem Example===

{{#ev:imeem|qn7c0G6HlR}}

Into this:

Imeem Example

And Viola, you have added an embedded music video for all to enjoy!

YouTube

YouTube's value to us here at the Music Video Wiki is also it's curse; its usually very easy to find just about any music video streaming from YouTube. The problem is finding a high-quality version without digging through possibly hundreds of videos. Often times the "video" is just a series of still images with the song playing in the background, or is a poor quality copy taken from television.

1) Go to YouTube and search for a music video. In this example we'll be using Lady GaGa's 'Paparazzi'.

2) YouTube is very easy to embed; the Video ID we need is right in the link to the page itself:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQJ9Vi8GLok

In this case the Video ID is QQJ9Vi8GLok

3) So the wiki code for this video would look like this:

===YouTube Example===

{{#ev:youtube|QQJ9Vi8GLok}}

Which turns into this:

YouTube Example

Daily Motion

Daily Motion is a mix of YouTube's popularity and imeem's quality; they often host 'Official Content' of popular music videos, and these videos are often of high quality and are licensed to be shared and embedded. One limit of Daily Motion however, is that alot of their videos are not licensed under 'ENG' for english-speaking countries, but instead are 'SPA' for spanish, or 'FRA' for french. These videos are not viewable inside the United States, so please do not add these links.

1) Go to Daily Motion and search for a music video. In this example we'll be using Alex Gaudino's 'Destination Calabria'.

2) Daily Motion is very easy to embed; the Video ID we need is right in the link to the page itself:

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4iy95_alex-gaudino-destination-calabria-h_music

In this case the Video ID is x4iy95

3) So the wiki code for this video would look like this:

===Daily Motion Example===

{{#ev:dailymotion|x4iy95}}

Which turns into this:

Daily Motion Example

MTV Music

MTV Music is similiar to imeem, in that the quality of the videos is very consistently high, however their selection is very limited, and in particular, not all of each artist's videos are available.

1) Go to MTV Music and search for a music video. In this example we'll be using Lady GaGa's 'Paparazzi'.

2) MTV Music is very easy to embed; the Video ID we need is right in the link to the page itself:

http://www.mtvmusic.com/lady_gaga/videos/400705/paparazzi.jhtml

In this case the Video ID is 400705

3) So the wiki code for this video would look like this:

===MTV Music Example===

{{#ev:mtv|400705}}

Which turns into this:
